Tonight, friends, the Progressor caucus takes another step toward its self-described "limitless future" by holding the inaugural gala of its latest off-shoot: the Gallente Independent Progressive Alternative or GIPA. On this occasion, I would like to extend congratulations to Ammentio Oinkelmar, the chairman of this new group, on securing the blessing of Emelena Morro and the FPPC.
Naturally, I disagree with the political conclusions that will be presented at this event. "Progress" is so often invoked as a clever cover term for the sort of unregulated and uncontrolled economic opportunism that brought us commercial "success" stories like the Serpentis Corporation. In the last ten years, throwing their weight behind initiatives to issue non-governmental licenses to capsuleers and open newly charted regions to direct exploitation by the same pilots they happily relieved of virtually all compulsory civic responsibility, the Progressors have indeed reshaped our universe.
But their vision, now realized, is a terrifyingly chaotic one. Planetary and system police forces have been weakened in favor of laws that benefit private contractors. Local economies have been completely upturned by unchecked market manipulation on the part of traditional megacorporations and capsuleers alike. What commerce and government need now, what we need now, is not less oversight.
This is a time to assess where our Federation has strayed from the tasks assigned it in the Charter and rebuild responsible and responsive government from the ground up, for the benefit of all, not just the privileged or the well-connected. Such is a charge that the Sociocrat caucus has always taken seriously and we will stay true to that calling: to leave not one soul behind as our nation and our people reach for the farthest stars.
